About the X1

The BMW X1 is the entry point to BMW's SUV lineup in the US: a subcompact luxury crossover that seats five and competes with the Audi Q3, Mercedes-Benz GLA and GLB, and Volvo XC40. It arrived in the US for the 2013 model year as an unusually low, wagon-like crossover built on rear-wheel-drive 3 Series underpinnings, then transitioned in 2016 to a more conventional, space-efficient SUV shape on a front-wheel-drive-based platform.

Across its generations the X1 has been praised for handling that is sharper than most rivals, punchy turbocharged four-cylinder engines, and a cargo area that is generous for the segment. It appeals to shoppers who want a BMW badge and driving feel at the brand's lowest SUV price point, including young professionals and small families stepping into the luxury market. The current 2023+ generation adds more rear-seat room, standard all-wheel drive, and a modern curved-display infotainment system.

The 2023 model: Redesigned for 2023 on an updated version of the UKL2 platform, the U11 grew larger in every dimension and adopted a more upscale, tech-forward cabin with a curved display running iDrive 8. The US lineup simplified to the xDrive28i with standard all-wheel drive, a 241-hp turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder, and a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. A performance-oriented M35i xDrive with a 312-hp four-cylinder joined the range for 2024.
