About the X1

The BMW X1 is the entry point to BMW's SUV lineup in the US: a subcompact luxury crossover that seats five and competes with the Audi Q3, Mercedes-Benz GLA and GLB, and Volvo XC40. It arrived in the US for the 2013 model year as an unusually low, wagon-like crossover built on rear-wheel-drive 3 Series underpinnings, then transitioned in 2016 to a more conventional, space-efficient SUV shape on a front-wheel-drive-based platform.

Across its generations the X1 has been praised for handling that is sharper than most rivals, punchy turbocharged four-cylinder engines, and a cargo area that is generous for the segment. It appeals to shoppers who want a BMW badge and driving feel at the brand's lowest SUV price point, including young professionals and small families stepping into the luxury market. The current 2023+ generation adds more rear-seat room, standard all-wheel drive, and a modern curved-display infotainment system.

The 2020 model: The 2016 redesign moved the X1 to BMW's front-wheel-drive-based UKL2 platform shared with Mini, trading the old model's low-slung proportions for a taller, more upright SUV shape with a significantly roomier cabin and cargo area. All US versions used a 228-hp turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder with an eight-speed automatic, offered as the AWD xDrive28i from launch and a front-wheel-drive sDrive28i added for 2017. A mid-cycle refresh for 2020 brought updated styling and infotainment.

  • Five-seat, two-row subcompact luxury crossover; BMW's smallest SUV in the US lineup
  • Not sold in the US for model year 2012 — the first US model year was 2013
  • Turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder power in most years; a 300-hp turbo inline-six (xDrive35i) was offered only in the first generation
  • First generation (2013-2015) was rear-wheel-drive based; second and third generations use a front-wheel-drive-based platform with optional or standard xDrive AWD
  • Current generation (2023+) comes standard with all-wheel drive; the M35i xDrive performance trim arrived for 2024
  • Known for combining relatively engaging driving dynamics with strong cargo space for its size class
