2024 BMW X5
Midsize luxury crossover SUV · Fourth generation (G05) (2019–present)
About the X5
The BMW X5 is a midsize luxury crossover SUV and the model that launched BMW's SUV lineup, arriving in the US for the 2000 model year. BMW branded it a "Sports Activity Vehicle" to signal its car-like, unibody construction and handling-focused character, and every generation has been built at BMW's plant in Spartanburg, South Carolina. It has remained the brand's core two-row luxury SUV through four generations, competing with the Mercedes-Benz GLE, Audi Q7, Lexus RX, and Porsche Cayenne.
Across its run the X5 has offered a wide spread of powertrains — inline-six and V8 gas engines, a diesel option for several years, and plug-in hybrid variants in later generations — plus an optional third-row seat from 2007 onward. Shoppers are typically drawn to its blend of driving dynamics, upscale interiors, and strong towing capability for the class. Used-market pricing varies widely by generation, engine, and options, so trim details matter when comparing listings.
The 2024 model: The G05 moved to BMW's CLAR platform, growing slightly while adding a more modern cabin with larger digital displays and available air suspension. US powertrains have included the xDrive40i turbo inline-six, V8 models (xDrive50i, later M50i and M60i), and the xDrive45e plug-in hybrid from 2021. A significant 2024 refresh brought 48-volt mild-hybrid assistance, a curved display running iDrive 8, and a longer-range xDrive50e plug-in hybrid.
