2019 Volvo XC40

The Volvo XC40 is a five-seat subcompact luxury crossover SUV and the smallest gas-powered SUV in Volvo's US lineup. Introduced for the 2019 model year, it was the first Volvo built on the CMA small-car platform co-developed with parent company Geely. Its upright, boxy proportions and minimalist Scandinavian cabin distinguish it from rounder rivals such as the BMW X1, Audi Q3, and Mercedes-Benz GLA and GLB, and it was named 2018 European Car of the Year shortly after its global debut.

The XC40 has built a reputation for a comfortable ride, simple controls, clever interior storage, and Volvo's traditional emphasis on standard safety equipment. The 2019 model: The XC40's only generation to date arrived in the US for the 2019 model year as Volvo's first model on the CMA platform shared with parent company Geely, initially offering a front-wheel-drive T4 and a 248-hp all-wheel-drive T5, both turbocharged 2.0-liter fours. A 2023 mid-cycle refresh brought revised front styling, Google built-in (Android Automotive OS) infotainment, and a 247-hp 48-volt mild-hybrid B5 powertrain in place of the T4/T5 engines. All-wheel drive became standard for 2024, and the generation continues with minor year-to-year changes through 2026.
