2017 Volvo XC90

The Volvo XC90 is Volvo's flagship three-row SUV and the brand's first-ever SUV, sold in the US since the 2003 model year. Across two generations it has offered seating for up to seven and available all-wheel drive, competing with vehicles like the Acura MDX, Audi Q7, and BMW X5. It is best known for its safety engineering — both generations debuted with then-new safety technology — and it is one of the few vehicles to win North American Truck of the Year twice, in 2003 and 2016.

Typical buyers are families who want three rows of seats with understated Scandinavian design and a strong safety record. The used market splits cleanly: first-generation models (2003-2014) are affordable family haulers with five-cylinder, six-cylinder, and V8 engines, while second-generation models (2016 onward) add modern driver-assistance features, four-cylinder and plug-in-hybrid powertrains, and a minimalist touchscreen-centered cabin. There was no 2015 model year in the US. A substantial refresh reached US dealers during the 2025 model year, and the XC90 remains on sale alongside Volvo's all-electric EX90.

The 2017 model: A ground-up redesign on Volvo's Scalable Product Architecture, powered exclusively by 2.0-liter four-cylinder engines: the turbocharged T5, supercharged-and-turbocharged T6, and the T8 plug-in hybrid. It introduced the portrait-oriented Sensus touchscreen and Pilot Assist driver assistance, with five-, six-, or seven-seat layouts. For 2022 the US lineup shifted to B5 and B6 mild hybrids plus a longer-range T8, and a major mid-cycle refresh arrived during the 2025 model year (sold as a 2025.5 model) with a new front end, a redesigned interior, and a larger portrait touchscreen running Google built-in software.
